Integrating ESG into Real Estate Investment Advisory

Bookings for the 2023 BBP Real Estate ESG Training course, delivered by Hillbreak, are now open. Due to the high demand expected and the need to ensure an impactful learning experience for participants, the course is being delivered to groups of between 15-25 individuals. The key details of the course include the following:

We’re pleased to announce that this group will, for the first time, be delivered in person over one full day in an exciting new trial of this format. The session will be held at The Space In Marylebone, London and will include lunch and refreshments for all participants.

Group Adv-D Course Dates

  • Pre-Course preparatory session (2 hours) – delivered online via Zoom in the run up to the training day. Date and time TBC
  • Core Module One: 3 May 2023 (9:00-13:00) – pre-course learning materials for Module One will be released to participants in advance of the first training date via our online learning hub
  • Core Module Two: 3 May 2023 (13:30-17:30)

Audience

The training has been designed to meet the specific needs of advisory professionals in capital markets, investment advisory, valuation, leasing and transactions-based roles. It is open and applicable to those in the following or closely-related roles:

  • Equity raising
  • Debt sourcing and structuring
  • Investment brokerage / consultancy
  • Agency (i.e. buying, selling and leasing assets and portfolios)
  • Valuation
  •  Capital markets research

For participants wishing to attend from asset owners, investment management, lending or developer organisations, please refer to the Asset Owners & Managers Pathway.

Please note that the course has been developed to fulfil a particular industry skills development need and is intended for the audience set out above and in the course prospectus document. The BBP and Hillbreak reserve the right to reject booking requests from individuals or organisations that do not fall into eligible role categories, including, for example those in ESG and sustainability consultancy roles.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, participants will: 

  • Have greater awareness of market drivers and trends and the implications of these for clients and their investments.
  • Have better understanding of how ESG-related strategies of investors and occupiers are evolving and how this impacts on the advice and insights that clients need from their advisors and agents
  • Have deeper knowledge and understanding of material ESG factors and their effects in different investment contexts, within and beyond the transaction of assets, portfolios and operating platforms
  • Be able to identify and advise on the ESG-related risks and opportunities that are material to different transaction and capital raising contexts, including understanding the relationship with property value
  • Be more confident to integrate ESG factors into investment strategy advice and appraisals
  • Be able to justify the advice given to clients and the positions represented to clients’ counter-parties in the context of the evolving

Participant Journey

The course features a small amount of pre-course learning, two core modules of live teaching and a selection of brand new elective modules which will focus on specific key topics. These elective modules will be available to all participants who have completed the core modules on either the Asset Owners & Managers or the Advisors pathway.

Participants embark upon the core programme and are enrolled onto the newly reconfigured Hillbreak Learning Hub where they will find all of the materials they need to undertake the pre-course learning ahead of their live teaching modules. The live teaching modules for the core programme last 4 hours each and will take place on the morning and afternoon of the same day.

For the core programme live teaching, participants will join fellow professionals from peer organisations in groups of around 20, all of whom will be on the Advisors Pathway. All resources needed for the live teaching sessions will also be made available on the Learning Hub.

  • Core Module Two: 6 June 2023 (13:30-17:30) – pre-course learning materials for Module Two will be released on completion of Module One.

The live sessions will be held virtually using Zoom.

Audience

This particular course group is a trial consolidation group, bringing Asset Owners and Managers, and Advisors together for the first time in the spirit of radical collaboration which BBP members have been advocating. It has been re-designed especially for real estate professionals working within an asset management context, including those working for fund management and investment advisory institutions, Real Estate Investment Trusts and private property companies; as well as advisory professionals in capital markets, investment advisory, valuation, leasing and transactions-based roles. It is open and applicable to those based in the UK and mainland Europe in the following roles: 

  • Fund managers

  • Know what needs to be done at each stage of the investment lifecycle to address these ESG-related risks and opportunities – and how to factor these into investment decision-making. 
  • Know how to measure, set targets for, track and report on ESG factors, including in relation to risk profile, environmental performance and social impact. 
  • Understand the scope and limitations of the principal ESG measurement, benchmarking and certification frameworks, and the role these can play in improving transparency. 
  • Be confident in driving forward the environmental and social performance of assets under management, based on a stronger appreciation of some of the practical interventions that are available

Module One (Context & Strategic Considerations) 

  • ESG drivers and market trends: understanding how investment and operating contexts are changing in response to environmental and societal imperatives. 
  • New risks and opportunities: defining key ESG topics, such as Net Zero and social impact, and their application to different property types and asset strategies. 
  • Financial and non-financial returns: unpacking the relationship between ESG, property value and investment performance. 
  • Measurement and transparency: certification, benchmarking and reporting frameworks applicable at the asset, portfolio and corporate level. 

Module Two (Practical Implementation) 

  • Prioritising ESG interventions throughout the property investment lifecycle, including integration into asset business plans and the growing role of sustainable finance. 
  • Ways of engaging with other stakeholders, such as occupiers and operating partners, to secure the delivery of ESG interventions and outcomes. 
  • Establishing roles and responsibilities, ensuring accountability and incentivising action across the value chain. 
  • Market leadership: examples of best practice and innovation from around the sector.

Audience

All elective training modules have been designed as supplementary to the BBP ESG for Real Estate Professionals Course, and are only open and available to those who have completed the core modules on the Asset Owners & Managers Pathway or the Advisors Pathway. Elective module bookings from participants who have not completed the aforementioned course will be declined unless they are currently registered on the core modules and due to complete them by their elective module dates.

  • Have greater awareness of how debt products can fit within the ESG investment spectrum and the ability to cite and explain examples of recent sustainable finance precedents and innovations
  • Have a better understanding of labelling in debt products
  • Be able to explain key industry driven sustainable finance standards and frameworks
  • Know about current and emerging regulation impacting upon sustainable lending and borrowing
  • Have an understanding of the “use of proceeds” concept and topics and issues to which it can be applied
  • Have an understanding of the relationship between ESG issues, credit assessment and the lending process
  • Be able to articulate the core components of corporate and house level sustainable finance frameworks

Course outline

The course will be delivered in one 2 hour online session.

This module has been designed especially for real estate professionals working in either a lending or borrowing context, including fund managers and investment institutions, banks, developers and Real Estate Investment Trusts and private property companies. It explores trends in sustainable finance markets, labelling of debt products as Green, Social, Sustainability, Sustainability-linked (GSSS) or Transition, how debt products can fit within responsible, sustainable or impact investment strategies, emerging regulation relevant to ESG in the debt markets, and key considerations when integrating ESG considerations into the lending or borrowing process.
