Alastair Mant

Managing Consultant

Alastair has been working to improve the environmental and social impact of real estate for nearly 15 years. He is a skilled researcher and communicator, who can develop and deliver strategies, and lead highly collaborative events and projects.

Until September 2022, Alastair worked at the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), where he was Director of Business Transformation and on the leadership team for nearly six years. During this time, he led numerous cross-industry collaborative projects to provide the industry with tools and guidance. Reports and topics included the “Net-Zero Whole Life Carbon Roadmap for the UK Built Environment”, net zero carbon buildings guidance, circular economy principals, measuring and reporting physical risk, the benefits of nature based solutions, and how to adopt open innovation.

He collaborated on projects with many of the UK’s largest banks, property owners, developers, contractors, engineers, architects, product manufacturers, and start-ups, as well as working with local and national government departments and agencies including BEIS, Defra, GMCA, GPA, Environment Agency, and the Construction Innovation Hub.

Prior to the UKGBC, Alastair spent eight years at the real estate consultancy, GVA (now Avison Young), with three of them as Director of Sustainability. He created ESG strategies and delivered reporting to GRESB and the CRC for a number of property funds, and developed an industry-leading pre-acquisition due diligence process and training for a large REIT. He also provided advice to numerous clients on regulations such as the feed-in tariffs, DECs, EPCs, and the 2018 minimum energy efficiency standards (MEES).

During this time, Alastair also worked very closely with several other divisions in order to embed ESG issues into their services. This included property management, building consultancy, fit-out, valuation, rating, and agency. Alastair also worked to improve the overall environmental and social performance of the consultancy, which included driving a project with the executive team to create GVA’s first holistic corporate responsibility strategy and associated reporting and internal communication and training, as well as overseeing the ISO 14001 and 50001 accredited EMS (environmental management system) and being on the project team for the company’s fit-out of a new HQ in the City of London, which obtained Ska Gold certification.

Away from delivering projects, Alastair is a regular keynote speaker and panellist at industry events, has been part of many industry working groups, and a mentor on several innovative start-up programmes.

Alastair’s work with Hillbreak has so far focused on training delivery, including on the BBP ESG Training Course for Real Estate Professionals, and for specific clients across the Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific, in investment management, asset management, and real estate consultancy.

Alastair is a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), a Practitioner of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), and a London National Park City Ranger.
