Matthew has 20 years of expertise in sustainability performance measurement, data management, benchmarking, analysis and data visualisation, target-setting and tracking, net zero pathways, quality assurance and corporate disclosure & reporting.

Matthew worked for Upstream (now part of JLL) from 2001 to 2020, following an MA in Human Geography at Edinburgh and an MProf in Leadership for Sustainable Development with Forum for the Future.

Matthew has been instrumental in defining several real estate industry standards for measurement and reporting of non-financial data. He created an operational performance benchmarking service which evolved into the Real Estate Environmental Benchmark under the Better Building Partnership. He also conceived and ran the ULI Greenprint Carbon Index in its first years. Building on this experience Matthew was commissioned as an expert advisor in the creation of the GRI Construction and Real Estate Sector Supplement; the EPRA Best Practices Recommendations for Sustainability Reporting (sBPR); and the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) assessment.

He has helped dozens of clients define, set-up and deliver their portfolio-wide sustainability performance measurement and monitoring programmes, covering a wide range of socio-economic and environmental impact areas. Examples include: LaSalle Investment Management’s Sustainability Management Programme, Majid Al Futtaim’s Net Positive Commitment and Green Sukuk and Hammerson’s Positive Places strategy.

Alongside expertise in defining appropriate sustainability metrics, Matthew also has significant know-how in checking and improving data management systems and processes. Furthermore, he has helped many companies connect their overarching strategies with their detailed improvement plans (and vice versa). For example, he has facilitated iterative target-setting using both bottom-up and top-down approaches so that corporate-level net zero ambitions are allocated fairly at asset-level with the buy-in of those responsible for delivering improvements. Additionally, Matthew is skilled in distilling and communicating complex ideas in engaging and persuasive ways.
